According to new information released on Wednesday, Greek-American Las Vegas police officer Shay Mikalonis is showing improvement following surgery, after being shot in the head on Monday night in Las Vegas, .

Las Vegas Police Protective Association President Steve Grammas said in a statement today, “His (Mikalonis) blood pressure is getting better. He is still alive and he is fighting.”

On Monday, Mikalonis was part of a large contingent of Las Vegas policemen monitoring demonstrators protesting the death of George Floyd near the Circus Circus complex when protesters began hurling rocks and bottles at the officers near midnight. Police reports state that as officers moved in to make arrests, a gunman standing across the street from the police fired a single shot, striking Mikalonis in the head.

His alleged shooter, 20-year-old Edgar Samaniego, has since been jailed on multiple counts, including attempted murder. During an initial court appearance, Samaniego was denied bail.

AHEPA, The Greek American organization wrote on Facebook that Mikalonis is a member of St John’s Greek Orthodox church in Las Vegas.
